Happy Saturday to all my friends and family who are reading this and supporting me through this process :)
Today I am going to talk about a very small but crucial spot in our house....the powder room. This added feature on the living/dining level has been such a blessing for us. With all the bedrooms and bathroom on the top-most level of the house, this space caters to us and our guests. With the very limited 6' x 6' measuring, I wanted it to pack a punch!
Strategy: The 1st time I saw it, I knew I was going to paint the walls a darker color and leave the ceiling white, giving the room the visual height. A big mirror on one wall and an artistic statement on the opposite wall will give it a multi-dimensional effect...I knew I was starting out right.
Foundation: The builder started us off with an updated mirror, light fixture and a tiny window that brings in light. The pedestal sink looks sleek and saves space. I went straight for a dark gray on the walls and decided that yellow was going to be my accent color.

Decor Elements:
- We tried a couple of different art pieces before we found the ONE...an abstract, flower painting, with streaks of gray, yellow and some gold, it just pulled the whole room together. The larger scale and size of the painting covered the tall, dark wall just right.
- I am a sucker for collecting random items from our travels. I saved a wine bottle from our honeymoon, which had a yellow label on it. I added some flowers to it and it fit right on the window sill.
- I also recommend investing in some multi-functional photo frames. I used 2 in this space that is just a sheet of glass with a black frame. I have used them to showcase my own art, photos and in this case, scrapbook paper. I found 2 sheets that had a similar flower motif from the flower painting. So as your eye travels through the space, I created a pattern of color, shape and scale.
Key take-aways from this project:
- A small room can totally handle a large-scale focal point, it actually makes the room feel bigger.
- Repeating patterns and colors across the different walls of the same room can create an integrated feeling and your eyes will skip the dark walls to focus on the statement pieces.
- Channelling my inner-Cam...your powder room CAN bring in the 'WOW' factor. It can be a small preview for your guests of how amazing the rest of the house is going to be :)
